Google Traffic Dropping

Hello,

Since I started writing about brokers my traffic has been dropping. I had about 100 articles at the start of January and about 100 uniques per day from google. I now have 150 articles, around 50 of which are about brokers, but since I started doing this my traffic has fallen at a rate of around 5% to 10% per month. Any ideas about what could be going on? :(

Looks like you've moved up the ladder.. from a lesser competition sub-niche to the hyper-competitive 'broker...' based keywords. You might want to scale down on using 'brokers' and get back to the theme of your previous articles, so the scales are tilted back.

Thanks admin,

But I don't understand why my original 100 articles or so no longer bring in the traffic from google that they used to. Is this normal? Do you think google have downgraded my site for having 'broker' articles?

Google keeps updating their algo's on almost a daily basis. Its only the big updates that are announced and usually create a buzz. You shouldn't specifically get too obsessed with Google. I know a drop in traffic can be alarming but just keep what you're doing.

I don't think a website can be downgraded because of content relating to 'brokers' if that were the case, there are more bigger sites that would get the boot first.

Try checking your backlinks, see if someone is copy/pasting or autoblogging your content (ahrefs.com offers a free account which gives you such data, from their 'new domains' linking to your site). But in my view, it would be a waste of time trying to chase all these content copiers. Google sucks at identifying the original content, so the first one to index is treated as original.

If you are using webmaster tools, click on Optimization>Content Keywords which gives a break up of keywords and its significance, especially if your website's significance for a particular keyword is too high, it could be that Google is ranking your site based on this keyword and the rest of the content.

One of my site's traffic has dropped gradually since late Feb 2013. I checked Google Webmaster tools and noticed a huge 404 errors increase (from 400 to 12K). I fixed all the errors in Feb (4 month ago) but traffic keeps going down gradually (lost 50% of my traffic). I am running out of ideas how to stop this...

Any ideas?

Guys.. David's question led me to do a bit of looking around (Haven't been focussed on SEO much lately). Found some chatter on forums like BHW.. Seems there was an update around 12th June targeting 'money making keywords' while payday loans was mentioned, I think it doesn't take too much of scratching to figure out 'forex brokers' too???

Here's the link.

P.S: On an unrelated note, I noticed an increase in one of my site's rankings after Penguin 2.0.. I'm not entirely sure if it was because I changed the URL from http:// to http://www. But I did start using Google's pagespeed service. Will update on this in another thread, maybe end of June, if the traffic still holds.

I am sure that this traffic drop has nothing to do with the additional articles about ''forex brokers''.

David if you are loosing your rankings you must ask yourself:

- aren't you a victim of onsite over optimization ? Keep your keyword density at 1% if you have EMD domain, else 2% is enough

- check your page loading time, check your bounce rate and also check webmaster tools for any messages

- aren't you a victim of offsite over optimization ? For example once you reach top spots you must STOP creating anchor text links because your page is already relevant, add pure branding terms and synonyms, naked URLs etc.

These days one must buy only handful of high quality backlinks and most probably you are loosing rankings due to over optimization, OR maybe you are loosing old backlinks webmasters deleting them or those sites with your backlinks were deindexed or lost their PR.

So if you fixed all 404 errors, you could be loosing backlinks you bought in the past or you have been hit by over optimization algo. Read above my advice to David.

Doesn't matter how the site is called, if you jumped up in the results just like I did after Penguin 2.0 it means that you have well diversified anchor text backlinks from quality sources and great onpage SEO.

Or maybe you're just lucky guy ? :D

Hard to say what relevancy does Google assign today to pagespeed, in fact my new website running on weaver theme is damn slow almost 7 seconds loading time and still in top five for quite competitive keywords.

Actually, this could just be it! I had a lot of links on trade2win and they went through my entire posting history and deleted every one of them...  This happened early this year, perhaps it's connected to that?

Thanks for your advice.

I never bought any back links, nor did over optimization.

I would suggest some optimization.

Reason why old articles get less traffic is maybe because they are old and google thinks that they are not relevant no more.

If you write an article about a broker that allows scalping - get an internal link to your old scalping strategys page for example. This helped a lot when i was still focusting on seo

Actually easier is to add some fresh content into existing old article that used to be ranking, just add few sentences and that is new content.

Frank if I may ask what do you focus on when promoting brokers if not SEO anymore ? Is it media buying ?

It's my belief that pagespeed has an indirect relation with rankings. I have heard that the faster your page speed time, the more frequently you will find Google crawling your website. As it has limited resources to crawl the web, if other things are equal it favors sites which load faster.

Sorry double post was unable to edit original post.

How many of the 50 brokerage articles contain affiliate links? Are these affiliate links cloaked or raw affiliate links? It is possible that Google may have deemed your website a thin affiliate website, while Google isn't against affiliates if they think your site is a thin affiliate site they may punish you. I have heard of people's Google traffic dropping after the introduction of affiliate links to their site, I try and keep the percentage of outbound affiliate links quite low. I have seen case studies which suggest the same kind of thing.

In terms of keeping content fresh, if your using a CMS such as Wordpress get a XML plugin which will inform Google of how recently articles have been updated etc. I update brokerage reviews with any new piece of information or product the brokerage launches, keeping the articles fresh.
